Our first Matt Moreno “Steady In All Roles” Award was given to Derek Ramsey at the Bryan High School Football Banquet on January 24, 2024!
The Matt Moreno Memorial Foundation granted it's first award, the Matt Moreno "Steady In All Roles" Award which comes with a $1500 scholarship. Congratulations to Derek Ramsey, a senior football player from Bryan High School that shares a partial expression of Matt's Spirit. He's a great young man, on a great trajectory in life. I look forward to seeing his potential come to full realization and hope our scholarship helps get him launched as he approaches the next chapter in his life. Coincidentally, after granting the award I learned that Derek will be attending Texas A&M University and actually wants to pursue Mechanical Engineering which is where I am based!
The Matt Moreno “Steady In All Roles” Award
The Matt Moreno “Steady In All Roles” Award is exclusively awarded to a football player on the Bryan High School football team. Matt played for the Bryan Vikings and was awarded Offensive Player of the Year during his senior season. A newspaper article titled “Steady in all roles” was published by the Bryan-College Station Eagle. Matt was recognized as a strong team player that represented the team very well both on and off the field. The interesting part of Matt’s story that is not told, is how he became the starting quarterback which actually led to him receiving the Offensive Player of the Year Award. Matt never sought to be the quarterback for this team; he was enjoying playing in other positions. What he did do, was volunteer to be the quarterback for the practice squad that the starting defense trained against. In observing how well he was playing in that capacity, Coach Rogers decided that Matt should actually be his back-up quarterback. While attending a practice session, Coach Rogers actually told me that was his plan. I told Matt that evening and he was surprised. Coach Rogers had not yet told him, so he wasn’t certain if I was joking or if it was going to happen. In the end it did. In addition, just a couple of games into the season, the starting quarterback, one of Matt’s great friends, Kerry Brooks, experienced a season ending injury. The rest is history. The point is that every team has someone that is “Steady in all roles”. Some will coincidentally get an opportunity like Matt, do well on the field, and receive a traditional award. This award was conceived to acknowledge those that have that potential, whether they receive the opportunity to display on the field or not. Lastly, the other characteristic that Matt brought to the table that influenced many of his teammates, was his ambition. This award seeks to acknowledge that as well. Candidates will have a definitive vision for their future and demonstrated genuine potential to bring that vision to reality. Our hope is that the award helps them launch on that trajectory.
